Save Iconic Coney Island!

Save Iconic Coney Island’s Historic Amusement District!

A developer is trying to replace Coney Island’s historic Amusement District with a casino—a reckless and short-sighted plan that puts private profit ahead of the public good.

This casino will do nothing to improve Coney Island. Instead, it threatens to erase large parts of a beloved area that has been a fun, family-friendly destination for over a century. The Amusement District is more than just rides and games—it’s a cultural landmark, a symbol of New York City’s history, and a place generations of families have enjoyed. A casino does not belong in Coney Island. Tell your elected officials to protect the integrity of this iconic neighborhood and reject this harmful development.

No Casino in Coney Island

  • To our local Elected Officials, I am writing to express my strong and unequivocal opposition to the proposed construction of a casino in Coney Island. This project poses a serious threat to the character, livability, and future of our neighborhood. Rather than offering meaningful benefits to our community, the casino would bring irreversible harm. It is a short-sighted development that prioritizes private profit over public interest. The casino will not improve Coney Island. It will replace large sections of the historic amusement area—an area that has long been a symbol of public recreation, family-friendly fun, and American and New York City history. This development would destroy the unique cultural fabric of Coney Island, eliminating the very features that make the neighborhood special and replacing them with a gambling complex that serves no public good. Additionally, the casino plan threatens to block access to the beach and boardwalk, vital public spaces that belong to all New Yorkers. Streets will be closed off, foot traffic redirected, and open space swallowed by concrete. What was once a place of joy and openness risks becoming a privatized zone, exclusive and unwelcoming to residents and visitors alike. More concerning are the social consequences. A casino would bring an increase in crime, traffic, litter, noise, and pollution. These are not abstract concerns; they are realities documented in neighborhoods that have allowed casinos to take root. Our community will suffer. Long-time residents will be pushed out. Small businesses—many of which have operated here for generations—will close under the strain of higher rents, lower foot traffic, and an altered customer base. Coney Island deserves thoughtful investment: improved infrastructure, affordable housing, better public transportation, education and job opportunities, and preservation of its historic attractions. A casino offers none of these. Instead, it threatens to replace community resilience with corporate exploitation. I urge you to reject the proposed casino project in the strongest possible terms. Protect Coney Island’s future. Stand with the residents, families, and business owners who call this community home. Sincerely,

These six politicians will decide if the Casino gets built in Coney Island. They will each appoint one member of the board that decides on the Casino. Call or write each of them to say you are against the Casino in Coney Island and will not vote for any politician who does not vote against the Casino. Leave a voicemail if there is no answer.

This is a suggested sample of what you could say when you call each politician… or just tell them how you feel.

Hello,

My name is [Your Name], and I’m calling to express my strong opposition to the proposed construction of a casino in Coney Island.

A casino would destroy the very character and spirit of Coney Island—the reason so many people visit and love this place. The plan to build massive 20- and 40-story casino towers that cast shadows over the amusement area is completely unacceptable. These developments threaten the unique identity, accessibility, and vitality of our community.

Please make it clear to [Politician’s Name] that I will not support or vote for any elected official who does not stand firmly against this project.

Thank you for your time.
